There is an excellent article on Mokuren Dojo about the #1 “self-defense” skill being breakfalls since the risk of falling is for most people probably much higher than the risk of having to defend oneself against an attacker. Along those lines, there are a lot of studies about taijiquan decreasing the risk of falling in the elderly. The risk of falling is quite a serious risk for many older people. I think almost anyone can learn breakfall skills but if someone is having difficulty just walking, starting some very basic taijiquan seems like a great idea. If they can throw in some vibrating platform work, no doubt that could help. If they could learn breakfall skills along with it, they’d have two great “self-defense” skills for every day life, and especially in every day life as a senior.
