One day, my father watched me perform pi quan for him. I was sort of showing off saying “look at me, Dad. Isn’t that cool? I’ve picked up a little xingyiquan”. He smiled gently as if to say “that’s cool and I’m proud of you, but you’re not really getting it and I can’t really spell it out for you” (of course I experience that sort of sentiment all the time as a dad myself now so it’s easy to recognize). He said quietly that taijiquan has the same thing. I thought he may have been being proud and just biased toward taijiquan but perhaps he was saying something more profound than I realized at the time.
