There is an article in the WSJ today in which two golf coaches are reported to say something like practicing 15 shots in 30 minutes where each shot is at a different target every time is better than practicing 1000 shots. They also say golf is one of the only sports in which more practice can actually make people do worse. I think they are talking about needing random training because the actual activity will be random but also about better mental focus and “intent” and so on. I still would think beginners need more block training but then again every time I practice, say, a particular throw, it is slightly different given different positioning, different size and shape of partner, etc.
