Here is a good interview with Rafael Lovato, Jr., the second American after BJ Penn to win the BJJ world championships at the black belt level. The interview is done by some judo guys who aren’t exactly professional dj’s and that makes the interview better. One of them describes rolling with Lovato, saying the pressure [...]

Nice video I saw on Combat Sports Conditioning. I’m more likely to watch it again if I re-embed here.
I’m too lazy and frugal to go buy kettlebells, though. I may try a few of these exercises with dumbbells if I feel like it. I like the hip heist sweep. More judo throw-ish. I don’t like [...]

This thread has a judoka’s perspective on bjj guard positions and uses. Talks about open guard, rubber guard, and spider guard. I don’t yet understand these distinctions. Kuzushi using the legs from a bottom position is something I am finding through experimentation, though. Will have to go back to read and better understand the thread [...]

Some examples for me to test my 80/20 theory. Entry to inside for judo throws. Cloud hands movement - left hand to inside of other person’s right arm, ward off to rollback to pull down. Right hand is starting its ascent at same time. Turn to do ippon seoi nage. That is so easy to [...]

This one was another good one:
When a German mugger spotted a blind beggar at a train station in Germany, he must have thought it would be the easiest mugging of his career.
The teenage mugger spotted the 33-year-old beggar sitting outside a train station in the south-western town of Giessen and thought he would be easy [...]

These guys train reality-based Bujinkan ninjutsu as well as compete in judo. As if that weren’t enough, they maintain a martial arts wiki (the only one?) encyclopedia called Akban (”The Akban project aims to document and classify many martial arts in a free martial arts encyclopedia”
with videos on everything from qigong to bjj. An [...]

Interesting comparison on emptyflower. Excerpt:
judo good- lots of judo people out there, LOTS. not much politics. very functional. techniques are tested regularly. ground work is fun. good work out. chokes are good to learn. arm locks are good to learn. pins are great to learn. good for cops. judo guys can do what they say [...]

More on push then pull. Finally starting to get the right feeling and rhythm a little bit in the body. My senseis get on me about not creating movement and keeping it constant. “Pluck” is really what is needed. A sudden sharp move downward aided by gravity. That can lead into a nice sacrifice throw. [...]

I’ve never heard of this art called jukido, but this essay provides some good criticism and advice on how one should approach randori - probably the way Kano intended - for “research and development” of throws with the right open attitude and not attempting to not get thrown, thereby imposing too many limits on learning [...]

Breakdown of throws from Human Weapon. This site, “The person who is throwing you on the mat … is a girl” is quite a nice blog site to go back and read.
